How to Kit A Canvas Online

So you’ve found the perfect needlepoint canvas, and now you need the perfect thread to go with it. Don’t have access to an LNS, but don’t want to give up the control and prefer to kit yourself? We’ve got some tips and tricks for how to navigate our site and find the perfect thread for your next project!

If you’re new to needlepoint and don’t know where to start at all, we highly recommend clicking on “Threads 101” under the Threads section on the nav bar of our site. Just click “Shop > Threads > Threads 101” to get there! Here you will find an explainer on all the different types of threads available, as well as what mesh size they are suited for. Don’t know what mesh size means? Don’t worry, we explain that too! This is a great place to start to answer all of your common questions about thread.

Once you’re comfortable with the basics, you can go ahead and navigate back to the shop page and start choosing! Using our filters is a great way to narrow down what you’re looking for.

The easiest way to start filtering is by mesh size. If you bought a 13 mesh canvas, go ahead and check off “13 mesh” under the filters to make sure you’re choosing thread with enough coverage for your canvas. From there, you can either choose to narrow things down even further by vendor (brand) of thread, or simply choose the color you’re looking for and select from all brands of thread. Some people prefer a blend like Silk and Ivory (Brown Paper Packages), while others like a smooth silk like Planet Earth. Others choose based on color alone! It’s fine to mix and match within a canvas, just know that different threads will have different textures and sheens to them.

Another great offering on our site is partial cards of threads! If you have a canvas with lots of detail and color, but with very little of each color, you might not want to buy a full skein of thread for each color (unless of course you’re trying to build up your thread stash and want to save some for later.) Otherwise, a partial card is a great way to get just a little bit of each of the colors you need. We offer options for both 13 mesh (Planet Earth Silk) and 18 mesh (Vineyard Silk and Essentials) in partial cards! Make sure to select the “mesh size” filter to ensure you’re choosing the right size for your project as they can look similar in photos!

Happy shopping!
