Behind the Canvas - Sophie Stitches

General Needlepoint
I learned how to needlepoint when I was 8 years old! My aunt and uncle, Mary Jo and Bob, owned a needlepoint store on Newbury Street in Boston. Whenever my family visited, I’d spend hours in the shop flipping through canvases (and of course playing with their sweet shop dog who always sat in the window). My very first project was a baby-pink pig that we turned into a pillow—I still have it at my parents’ house in New Hampshire!
I’m a basketweave girl through and through. I love how mindless and meditative it feels, and how beautifully traditional it looks on a canvas. Next on my list is turkey work—I love the texture and dimension it adds.
Silk & Ivory and Vineyard Silk. Both have gorgeous color palettes and stitch so smoothly—it makes the whole process even more enjoyable.
About Your Designs
I noticed there was a gap in the market for cute, modern, and playful Jewish-inspired canvases, so I started designing my own. Once I got started, the ideas kept flowing—not just Jewish designs, but also fun canvases celebrating people, places, and everyday moments I love. Designing needlepoint canvases has become a true creative outlet—each one honors the traditions, travels, and little details that are most meaningful to me. My aunt also gifted me some of her vintage canvases, and those have been a huge source of inspiration for my work.
Playful, meaningful, approachable
Probably a pillow that my aunt had custom-designed. It was the first project where I tried a decorative stitch, and the colors and details are just amazing.
About You
In bed with a trashy TV show on—peak cozy vibes.
Walking in Central Park, FaceTiming my parents’ dog, or trying a cool new restaurant with my husband!
Extra needles, thread, and scissors… boring but true!
