Behind the Canvas - Sarah Gross Designs

Meet Sarah
Meet Sarah Gross! Born in Maryland, living in Connecticut.
General Needlepoint
I learned to needlepoint during the pandemic! I was then working for luxury shoe brand, Sarah Flint as a graphic designer and jr. art director and was asked to do an Instagram live with Brooke from Thorne Alexander, so she could give a tutorial on how to needlepoint!
I am a very basic needle pointer and just do the half-cross stitch!
My favorite threads are Silk & Ivory! They have the most beautiful look to them and think they have such stunning color choices.
About Your Designs
I wanted to create my own needlepoint pieces because I love looking up vintage canvases and have found so many unique floral designs that I don’t see being produced today! I sent Penny Linn all of the floral watercolors I thought would work best translated to needlepoint to achieve a similar look to these vintage canvases and they did the rest!
Floral, organic, timeless!
Nature is my biggest inspiration, especially flowers (if you can’t tell by my collection!). I love being able to paint a flower picked that day; it’s a flower that will never be created again, so I love that I get to preserve its beauty through my artwork.
I loved creating the gingham botanical series. Pairing my painted floral with a gingham border created such a charming north-east nostalgic feel that I love capturing in my designs!
My favorite canvas to stitch is the gingham botanical - cosmos! Something about the color combination of brown and blue speaks to me.
I think the best advice is to just pick up your paint brush! Sometimes starting can feel daunting, but if you take the first step to just start, beauty will follow.
About You
In my bed before I go to sleep, or on a long car ride.
Taking care of my newborn at home! Or cooking up a delicious meal, something most people don’t know about me is how much I love cooking!
Chapstick, film camera, hand sanitizer.
I'm rewatching Modern Family and watching Summer House!
I love listening to The Toast, it reminds me of the banter I have with my two sisters!
We just bought a house, so I am loving looking at Q&As from @hagemanhomesinteriors, @thisoakhouse, and @ashleykane.
Two years ago at an estate sale I found the most amazing needlepoint canvas. It was huge and of bunnies, carrots, cabbage, and other garden vegetables. I still regret not purchasing it and hope one day it finds its way back to me!
Interiors are a big inspiration to me. I love looking at the use of color, the pattern designs used, and how everything comes together in a room. It’s such an artform to design a room and I love taking pieces of interior design and apply it to my artwork.
I am excited to see a few bigger projects come to life in 2025 and of course am excited to be a mom for the first time!
